Victim to Fashion

Heavy reliance on media with regards to the choice of clothes to wear makes a person more prone to becoming one. Fashion magazines, popular television shows and programs about fashion, show clothes worn by well known Hollywood celebrities and fabulous models. Most of these clothes are probably not affordable by majority of us nor do our faces and bodies remotely resemble those of the models wearing the clothes. In spite of this, we strain our budgets to purchase them and end up looking like a walking advertisement of a particular clothes brand.

Clothes should complement us. This can hardly be achieved if our choices for clothes would solely depend on the latest trend. We have to admit that not all styles would fit us no matter how good it looks on another. It is impossible not to stick out like a sore thumb when we wear clothes that doesn’t fit right or doesn’t conform to our image and personality. We tend to appear as trying too hard as we blindly follow whatever the “fashion authorities” say and rather ignore what the mirror shows us.

Fashion trends work in small doses. If clothes are combined skillfully with all-time classics, it creates a new look that doesn’t jar the senses. Let us say that the hottest craze for the season includes cowboy boots, head scarf, loud-colored pants, sequined cap and designer shades, would you wear them all at the same time just to show you have the latest of everything? An affirmative answer will confirm that you are certainly suffering from a serious overdose of fashion trends. True style is gone once overkill enters the picture.

Why spend a big amount of money just to be ridiculed? It doesn’t make sense. Having the means to buy higher-priced clothes is not a license to splurge without thinking. Take advantage of your privilege by building a wardrobe that makes most sense to your body type and lifestyle. A budget should be adjusted depending on one’s particular financial condition.

You can avoid being a fashion victim by being who you really are and remaining mindful of specific occasions and settings that may require some adjustments. A perfectly cool style can only be achieved if you feel comfortable about what you’re wearing. Comfort is not only limited to the style, size or texture of the clothes. It is more about the over-all feel of the clothes. So if you feel silly wearing something, you probably are!
